A DESCRIPTIVE REVIEW ON TRANSDERMAL PATCHES

ABSTRACT
A transdermal patch is a pharmaceutical preparation of different sizes
which contains one or more active pharmaceutical ingredient, proposed
to be applied on the skin, & after crossing the skin barriers deliver the
API to the systemic circulation. Transdermal drug delivery system
comes under the group of controlled delivery of the drug and its
objective is to transport the active ingredient, in a controlled &
predetermined rate, through the skin. Poor bioavailability of traditional
oral dosage form due to the hepatic first pass effect is improved by
introducing transdermal drug delivery system. This article reviews the
various types of transdermal patches, the selection of polymers & drug candidates which are
appropriate for the formulation of transdermal System, advantages and disadvantages, future
trends and finally its’ evaluation methods.
