ABSTRACT
Scientific evidence suggests that antioxidants reduce the risk for chronic diseases including cancer, heart disease and many other diseases. Primary sources of antioxidants are whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Bougainvillea glabra an common ornamental plant have been used by the traditional practitioner in variety of disorders like diarrhea, reduces acidity, cough and sore throught, decoction of dried flowers for the blood vessels and leucorrhoea and decoction of the stem in hepatitis. Ethanol extract of “Bougainvillea glabra “choicy” was screened to evaluate free radical scavenging effect. The extract exhibited significant reducing power and free radical scavenging effect on nitric oxide radicals. This antioxidant activity was concentration dependent which were compared with standard antioxidants such as
ascorbic acid. The highest free radical scavenging effect of the extract was observed at concentration of 1000 μg/ml and the IC50 value of extract was 1.61 μg/ml.
Keywords: Nitric oxide scavenging, ethanol Extract, Antioxidant activity, Bougainvillea glabra “choicy”.
