ABSTRACT
The hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) also known as
veno-occlusive disease (VOD) is characterized by jaundice, ascites and
hepatomegaly. The incidence of SOS during hematopoietic cell
transplantation varies depending upon the center and the definitions
used for making a diagnosis. Rates as high as 50 percent have been
reported, the current treatment for VOD is tissue plasminogen
activator (t-PA) and cyclosporine. Apart from this defibrotide is an
investigational treatment that may be promising. Defibrotide is a
polydeoxyribonucleotide isolated from pig intestine. In this article we
speculate the potential use of Nesiritide a 32 amino acid synthetic Brain
natriuretic peptide analogue along with Tirofiban for treating the
syndrome of VOD.
