Abstract

PATHYA - APATHYA IN GRIDHRASI (SCIATICA)

Dr. Babita Choudhary* and Dr. Kashinath Samagandi

ABSTRACT

Gridhrasi is one of the Vataja nanatmaja vyadhi, where dysfunction of Vata affects the gridhrasi nadi, characterized by low back pain radiating to the lower limbs, stiffness, and pricking type of pain. It starts from the kati-prishta (pelvic region and lumbosacral) and radiates to the jangha paada (thigh and feet), impairing the ability to lift the leg. The gait of the person resembles that of a vulture (Gridhra), hence the name Gridharsi. it can be correlated with sciatica. Sciatica is the most common debilitating condition causing low back pain (CLBP). This condition has become a major threat to the working population, with poor sitting postures and jerky movements worsening the scenario. Nidana sevana leads to various pathological changes in the body, resulting in disease. To prevent further pathogenesis, Nidana Parivarjana is essential. This highlights the significant role that Pathya and Apathya play in each disease. Acharya Charaka has clearly defined the importance and impact of Pathya on diseases, emphasizing that proper dietary and lifestyle practices can stop or even reverse the disease process.

Keywords: Gridhrasi, Sciatica, Pathya Apathya.
