Abstract

AN AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME- A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT

Generally, PCOD and PCOS may be used synonymously. But PCOD- Polycystic Ovarian Disease is a menstrual disease that occurs due to polycystic ovaries. while, PCOS is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome which is a metabolic syndrome in which there is a combination of many symptoms such as obesity, acne, acanthosis nigricans, etc. Sedentary lifestyle habits, fast food consumption, and lack of physical exercise are considered as leading causes of PCOS, Due to these various causes there is hyperandrogenism with the increase in levels of insulin is seen in the female body which leads to irregular menstruation, oligomenorrhea, acne, obesity, hirsutism, and constipation. In ancient samhitas of Ayurveda, there is no direct explanation for PCOS. But according to Anukta Vyadhi Siddhant which is told by Ayurveda, we can compare PCOS along with its symptomatology with a few Ayurvedic diseases such as artavakshaya or with nashtartava or with artava dushti. But instead of comparison one should think about the pathophysiology of PCOS and should try to break that pathophysiology in order to cure the PCOS. Ayurveda having holistic approach to curing disease. After ayurvedic treatment, the chance of recurrence is very less with minimal side effects. In this article, a case of PCOS is successfully treated with Ayurvedic management. Also, attention is given to preventing the recurrence of PCOS.
