ABSTRACT Optimization of product or process is determination of experimental conditions resulting in its optimal performance. Optimization has been defined as the implementation of systemic approaches to achieve the best combination of product and/or process characteristics under a given set of conditions. There are two types of optimization problems, constrained and unconstrained. Constrained problems are those in which restrictions are placed on the system while in unconstrained optimization problems there are no restrictions. The development of pharmaceutical formulation and the associated process usually involves two types of variables, dependent and independent. Optimization Techniques are categorized as Experimental designs, Modeling using regression analysis and Mathematical techniques. In this review the experimental techniques are explained in detail. Use of pertinent software can make the optimization task a lot easier, faster, more elegant and economical. Keywords: Optimization, problems, variables, experimental designs.
