Abstract

FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF BIOPOLYMER BASED TRANSDERMAL PATCH LOADED WITH ANTIMICROBIAL AGENT FOR EFFECTIVE BURN THERAPY

Shahana Shoukath*, Dr. Geetha V. S. and Ajanya K.

ABSTRACT

Silver sulfadiazine (SSD) is a sulfa antibiotic containing combinationof silver and antibiotic sulfadiazine. It has effective healing andantimicrobial activity in burns. Biopolymers are those derived fromnatural sources and here microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) wasextracted as biopolymer from banana pseudo stem and compared withthe commercial MCC to evaluate its properties. Then SSD containingbead was prepared using the extracted MCC by Ionic gelation methodand evaluated. The process parameters such as Amount of MCC andStirring time were optimized with central composite design (CCD)approach of response surface methodology in Design expert software.Transdermal patch incorporated with the bead is formulated by solventevaporation technique. Antimicrobial activity of formulated patch weredetermined by zone of inhibition test. In vitro permeability is evaluatedusing an artificial membrane and result shows that 88.15% of drug ispermeated through the membrane after 6 hours. In vitro dissolution study was carried outusing USP apparatus II (Paddle method) with slight modification in phosphate buffer pH 7.4for 6 hours and it shows cumulative drug release of 90.96% after 6 hours with first orderrelease kinetics.

Keywords: Biopolymer, Burn, MCC, SSD, Banana pseudo stem.
