Anjali Gambhava*, Anitha H. and Kartik Gambhava

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Kupipakwa Rasayana is a highly specialized branch ofAyurvedic alchemy (Rasashastra), focusing on the preparation ofpotent mineral and herbal formulations. These formulations, madethrough a meticulous heating process in a sealed glass bottle (Kupi),are renowned for their powerful therapeutic properties, particularly intreating chronic and severe conditions. Materials & Methods: Thisreview analyzes 68 Kupipakwa Rasayana formulations listed in thetext Rasayoga Sagara, categorized by ingredients, preparationmethods, and therapeutic uses. These formulations were comparedwith those documented in other classical texts, including Rasasara,Rasendrasara Sangraha, and the Ayurvedic Formulary of India. Theanalysis focused on identifying similarities and differences informulations, preparation techniques, and cross-references across thesetexts. Results: The study identified 134 formulations, classified intoSagandha and Nirgandha Kupipakwa Yoga, with further sub-classifications based on thepresence of sulfur (Gandhaka) and the emission of smoke (Bahirdhooma and Antardhooma)during preparation. Research work associated with these formulations includes physicochemicalanalyses, pharmaceutical standardization, and toxicity studies, aimed at ensuringconsistency and safety in therapeutic applications. Discussion: Kupipakwa Rasayanarepresents a distinct area within Rasashastra, characterized by its complex preparationmethods and the transformative effects of mercury and other ingredients. The detailed documentation in Rasayoga Sagara preserves this intricate knowledge, highlighting theimportance of controlled heating and ingredient sequencing in achieving potent therapeuticoutcomes. The cross-references with other classical texts validate the consistency andsignificance of these formulations across Ayurvedic traditions. Conclusion: KupipakwaRasayana formulations continue to play a vital role in Ayurveda, offering unique therapeuticbenefits that are unparalleled by other treatments.
