Abstract

THE CRITICAL ROLE OF POSTURE AND SPINAL ALIGNMENT IN MAINTAINING OPTIMAL HEALTH ACCORDING TO AYURVEDIC PRINCIPLES

Anamika*, Sakshi and Nishant

ABSTRACT

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, emphasizes theholistic balance of body, mind, and spirit to maintain health andprevent disease. A key aspect of this balance is the importance ofproper posture and spinal alignment. According to Ayurvedicprinciples, the spine is not just a structural support but also a conduitfor energy flow, known as “Prana” or life force, through the“Sushumna Nadi”, a central energy channel. Poor posture or spinalmisalignment can disrupt this energy flow, leading to imbalances thatmanifest as physical discomfort, mental stress, and illness. Ayurvedahighlights that maintaining an upright posture, whether sitting, standing, or moving, helps align the body’s energy systems, promotingoptimal physiological function. This includes improved circulation, enhanced digestion, better breathing, and mental clarity. Correct spinalalignment is also believed to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal issues, such as back pain, neck strain, and joint problems, by minimizing stress on the vertebrae andnervous system. Ayurvedic therapies, such as yoga, “Abhyanga” (therapeutic massage), andspecific herbal treatments, are used to support spinal health and posture correction.Integrating these practices into daily life not only improves physical well-being but alsoenhances mental and emotional balance, contributing to long-term health and vitality inalignment with Ayurvedic principles.
