AEGLE MARMELOS: A REVIEW ON PLANT ORIGIN, MEDICINAL USES, PHARMACOLOGICAL AND PHYTOCHEMICAL ACTIVITY

ABSTRACT
Nowadays plant medicine system is more eye-catching attention thanthe allopathic system as this system is pollution free, less toxic andwithout side effects. Aegle marmelos (linn) correa, commonly knownas Bael, belonging to the family rutaceae, is a medium sized, slenderand aromatic tree of Indian origin. Almost all the parts of this versatiletree species like leaves, roots, seeds, bark and fruit etc. contain a largenumber of chemical constituents like alkaloids, coumarins, tannins,carotenoids and essential oil, hence possesses various therapeutic andpharmacological properties including antidiabetic, anticancer,radioprotective, chemo-preventive, anti-arthritic, cardioprotective,antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal etc., thus this plant is an importantmedicinal plant in the traditional Indian system of medicine, theAyurveda.
