ABSTRACT
Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age, affecting approximately 7% of this population. The disorder is characterized by hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction, and polycystic ovaries, leading to various clinical manifestations and comorbidities. Aim: This review aims to provide healthcare providers with a comprehensive understanding of PCOS, including its clinical manifestations, diagnostic criteria, and treatment options. Methods: The article employs an algorithmic approach to evaluate and manage suspected or confirmed cases of PCOS. It emphasizes a thorough medical history, physical examination, and appropriate laboratory evaluations, following the 2003 Rotterdam criteria for diagnosis. Results: The review outlines the common clinical presentations, including hirsutism, menstrual irregularities, and infertility. It highlights the importance of addressing metabolic complications, such as obesity and insulin resistance, that often accompany PCOS. Lifestyle modifications, pharmacological treatments, and patient-centered care strategies are discussed. Conclusion: Effective management of PCOS requires a multidisciplinary approach tailored to individual patient needs. Interventions targeting metabolic health and reproductive function are crucial in alleviating symptoms and preventing long-term complications.
