ABSTRACT
Sahachara, botanically classified under Barleria prionitis, Barleriacristata, and Barleria strigosa from the Acanthaceae family, is asignificant medicinal plant used extensively in Ayurveda. This reviewaims to explore its historical, botanical, and pharmacological aspects.Traditionally, Sahachara has been utilized for its therapeutic potentialin treating ailments such as neurological disorders (Vatavyadhi), skindiseases (Kustha), and blood-related disorders (Raktavikara). Theplant's historical references date back to classical Ayurvedic texts,including Charak Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, which emphasize itsefficacy in treating Vata-Kapha imbalances. Modern researchhighlights its rich chemical composition, including bioactivecompounds like iridoids, phenolics, and flavonoids, responsible for itsantioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic properties. The reviewfurther discusses its Ayurvedic attributes such as Tikta (bitter) Rasa,Ushna (hot) Virya, and Katu (pungent) Vipaka, contributing to its ability to pacify Kapha andVata doshas. The plant is widely distributed across tropical regions and is easy to propagate.With both historical significance and modern scientific validation, Sahachara continues to bea vital component in traditional and contemporary medicinal practices, offering promisingtherapeutic potential.
