A CONCEPTUAL STUDY OF GRIDHRASI W.S.R TO SCIATICA

ABSTRACT
In present era humans changing way of life has lead to variousbiological disharmonies. As a result of the expansion of a busyprofessional and social life, poor sitting posture in work places,factories, continuous and excessive exercise, jerky movements etc maycause prevalence of Vatavyadhi and one amongst them is Gridhrasi.The lakshanas of gridhrasi are Ruk (pain), Toda (pricking sensation),Stambha (Stifness), and Muhuspandana (twitching), in Sphik (Gluteal),Kati (Waist), Prishta (Lowback), Uru (Thigh), Janu (Knee), Jangha(Calf), and Pada(foot), respectively and Sakthishepa Nigraha(restricted lifting of leg). The above mentioned symptoms can becompared with sciatica which is characterised by severe pain startingfrom low back region and radiating down towards the foot region. Thisis a common entity encountered in a clinical practise. This articleelaborates the general description of Gridhrasi w.s.r to sciatica. Itstreatment and procedures for management according to ayurveda and modern aspect isdiscussed.
