PHARMACOGNOSTICAL EVALUATION OF INGREDIENTS OF PANCHPALLAVA - AN AYURVEDIC COMPOUND

ABSTRACT
Background: Ayurveda classifies some medications for therapeuticpurposes under the Mishrakavarga (Group of medications) title.Panchapallava is one of these groups of Mishrakavarga. words“Pancha” means five and “Pallava” means leaves. Panchapallava isthe combination of leaves of Aamra (Mangifera indica), Jambu(Eugenia jambolana), Kapittha (Feronia limonia), Bijapura (Citrusmedica) and Bilva (Aegle marmelos). Material & Method: Freehandtransverse sections of five leaves through midrib were taken and usingrequired reagents. Sections were observed under the microscope toassess their various microscopic features. Observation & Result:Pharmacognostical characters shows identification characters of plantsincluded in Panchpallava like Crystals, Secretory cavity, Cavitycontaining crystals, Lysigenous oil cavity. Discussion andConclusion: The microscopic structures which are observed inPanchapallava helps in correct identification of leaves of Aamra (Mangifera indica;Anacardiaceae), Jambu (Eugenia jambolana; Myrtaceae), Kapittha (Feronia limonia;Rutaceae), Bijapura (Citrus medica; Rutaceae) and Bilva (Aegle marmelos; Rutaceae).
