ABSTRACT
Ayurveda Shalyatantra is the branch of surgical practice which utilizes different surgical and para-surgical interventions for treating disorders. Yantras are inevitable parts of all minor and major surgical procedures. Hasta (Hand) is considered as the Pradhantamam yantra because surgical instruments are in many ways simple extension of human hand. Surgical instruments such as forceps, dilators, speculums, needles, lancets etc are similar to the 101 Yantras and 20 Shastras mentioned in Ayurveda e.g., Samdansha Yantra, Naadi Yantra, Shalaka Yantra, Mandalagra Shastra, Vetasapatra Shastra, Suchi, Shararimukha Shastra etc. Sushruta had defined qualities, defects, diagnostic and treatment applications along with methods of manufacture and preservation of all surgical and non-surgical equipment’s. Most of the modern surgical instruments are only slight modifications of the instruments used by ancient surgeons.
