THE ANTI-ULCER PROPERTIES OF SYZYGIUM JAMBOS: INSIGHTS FROM IN-VITRO RESEARCH

ABSTRACT
Medicinal plants have been utilised for centuries as medicines, spices, and food additives. Technological and medical advancements in recent decades have enhanced healthcare and quality of life, but also come with concerns. Side effects from synthetic medications can lead to long-term health issues. Natural compounds, on the other hand, are beneficial to both biology and the environment. Syzygium jambos L. (Alston), popularly known as rose apple, has a long history as an essential traditional medicine with a wide range of applications across cultures. The plant contains secondary metabolites and extracts that have been linked to a range of health issues, including stress and inflammation. And is an essential therapeutic plant in the indigenous medicine system. It is found in Sub-Saharan Africa, Central America, and Asia. Traditionally, the plant has been used for the treatment of asthma, chronic bronchitis, diarrhoea, epilepsy and inflammation.Phytochemical studies of the different parts of the plant revealed the presence of several bioactive phyto-costing agents, such as phenolic compounds, glycosides, triterpenoids and volatile oils. It has also been reported that the plant has significant pharmacological activities such as antimicrobial, antinociceptive, antitumor, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antioxidant and hepatoprotective that are evaluated using various animal models. The current study could serve as a scientific foundation for future research and provide critical information for further enquiries into new drug discovery. Syzygium jambos leaves are used in treatment of Diabetes, diuretic, an expectorant in the treatment of rheumatism; to treat sore eyes; and as a febrifuge. Antiviral activity towards herpes simplex type 1 and type 2 and towards vesicular stomatitis virus. antibacterial activity against. acnes antioxidant, analgesic effects and anti-inflammatory properties.[1,2,3]
