ABSTRACT
Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb., commonly known as alligator weed, is a versatile plant with significant pharmacological potential. This review summarizes its diverse bioactivities supported by various studies across different pharmacological domains. The plant is rich in alkaloids, anthraquinones, flavonoids, megastigmanes, phenolics, saponins and sterols contributing to its observed medicinal properties. These include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-diabetic, anti-coagulant, anti-biofilm, anti-depressant and potential anti-HIV effects. Despite promising findings, most research remains preclinical, necessitating further clinical validation for human therapeutic applications. Standardization of extraction methods and identification of active compounds are crucial steps towards developing Pharmaceuticals based on Alternanthera philoxeroides.
