ABSTRACT
Nepeta cataria L. (Catnip; family – Lamiaceae) has been used traditionally to treat cold, flu, and fever since many decades. Various extracts of plant prepared by Soxhlet extraction and results of preliminary phytochemical screening of various crude extracts confirmed that only ethyl acetate extract contained bioactive classes of phytoconstituents elements. Therefore, only ethyl acetate extract was subjected to column chromatography to isolate bioactive classes of phytoconstituents. Column chromatography of ethyl acetate extract yielded white crystalline powder (NC-1; 196 mg) that was characterized as p-coumaric acid. The isolated compound was procured from market in large quantities as per protocol and used for preparation of medicated syrup. The prepared medicated syrup was found to be of good quality and followed all criteria according tostandard references. The exhaustive review of literature on p-coumaric acid suggested that p-coumaric acid has been used in the treatment of various ailments such as such as oxidative stress, cancer, inflammation, anxiety, fever, pain, arthritis, diabetic and obesity. Thus, it is suggested from observations that p-coumaric acid can be employed as one of bioactive compounds of plant, and antioxidant is the ability of molecules to protect biomolecules from oxidative damage by scavenging free radicals and However, less is known about the antioxidant activity of the essential oil or extract of Nepeta cataria. Several other studies prove the presence of flavonoids in Nepeta cataria extract and indicate therapeutic potential for lung cancer because of its flavonoid content.
