Abstract

NIGELLA SATIVA SEEDS: A TRADITIONAL MEDICINE FOR MODERN KIDNEY STONE TREATMENT

ABSTRACT

According to a well- known saying, “the garden is the poor man’s apothecary”, and natural remedies exist for all diseases. India has a rich tradition of plant-based knowledge in health care. Now a day our life style changes day by day and number of health issues increases. Most of the world’s population relies on herbal therapy for health-related issues. To treat such a several diseases, we select the black seed (Nigella Sativa) is an annual flowering plant from Ranunculaceae family, native to southwest Asia. The seed oil of this plant is used in many diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, inflammatory diseases, diabetes and digestive diseases, etc., The main aim of this present study was to evaluate the efficacy of Nigella Sativa for the treatment of kidney stone. The primary active ingredient/constituent like “Thymoquinone”, which is mainly effective against the urolithic patients. Thymoquinone also responsible for anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, diuretic property. The mechanism contributed to its ability to prevent or treat urolithiasis (kidney stones) by increasing the urine production and reducing the stone-forming substances. Other active ingredient such as nigellidine, nigellimine, and α- hederin, may also contribute to the anti-urolithic activity of nigella sativa. Finally, the result obtained in this study that N. Sativa possess significant amount of Nephrolithiatic activity.
