Abstract

EFFECT OF MODIFIED UPANAHA SVEDA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF KATIGRAHA

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Upanaha sveda is a Bahiparimarjana chikitsa i.e. tropical/localized treatment where the combination of medicinal drugs is prepared, made into poultice, heated and applied at the affected site. Step by step preparing Upanaha is more time consuming approximately 15-20 minutes. For minimizing the time taken for its preparation without compromising its efficacy classical Upanaha is modified as instant packets which is convenient, cost effective and less time consuming. Here in this study its effect is seen in the management of katigraha as it contains vatakaphahara drugs. Methodology: 5 participants from IPD from SDM Hospital Hassan having symptoms of katigraha fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected and intervention was done with modified Upanaha for a period of 7 days, observation and result of the study was recorded by usingappropriate statistical test. Observation and Result: Modified Upanaha sveda is significant both statistically and clinically. It has a significant effect on reducing the symptoms of katigraha thus it helped in improving the quality of life of the patients. Discussion: The drugs having ushna veerya and vatakaphahara properties were combined along with amla Dravya and more quantity of lavana which will reduces the stiffness and pain in the low back region. Upanaha sveda is a type of svedana, so it induces hyperthermia which improves local blood and lymphatic circulation thereby improving local tissue metabolism. Drugs used in this Upanaha are ushna, Tikshna in nature and due to its counter irritant effect, helped in relieving pain. Conclusion: Drugs used in Upanaha are having Ushna and Tikshna property and does the doshavilayana and dosha shodhana which helped in relieving margavarana of vata dosha thereby reducing the pain and also helped in pacifying sheeta-snigdha properties of ama/kapha thereby reducing the stiffness also effectively.
