Abstract

ASSESSMENT OF ANTIBIOTIC UTILIZATION PATTERN AMONG CHILDREN SUFFERING FROM INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND NONINFECTIOUS DISEASES USING CRP AS AN INDICATOR

ABSTRACT

Aim: To assess antibiotic utilization pattern among children sufferingfrom infectious diseases and non-infectious diseases using CRP as anindicator. Objective: To determine antibiotics utilised in childrensufffering from various types of infections. To assess CRP as anindicator. To determine the infection among children. Methods: Aprospective observational study was conducted in in-patientdepartment in secondary care hospital. CRP was used as an indicator todetermine the infection. Results: 73.00% of those with CRP valueshad a viral infection. About 11.00 % of the children had bacterialinfections, while 16.00 percent had non-infections. Most prescribedantibiotic 51.00% was ceftriaxone. 40.00% prescribed were twocombination antibiotics, 4.00% prescribed were three combinationantibiotics and 1.00% prescribed were five combination antibiotics.Conclusion: CRP testing had been reported by a large number ofhealthcare professionals as it can be utilised to determine infections. Inthis present study based on elevated CRP levels all the patients were prescribed antibioticsas an empirical therapy.
