FORMULATION AND EVALUTAION OF SUSTAINED RELEASE MATRIX TABLETS OF KETOPROFEN USING NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC POLYMERS - A REVIEW
ABSTRACT
Objective: The objective of the study was the formulation and evaluation of sustained release matrix tablets of ketoprofen using natural and synthetic polymers, to evaluate its pre compression and post compression parameters, and to show its compatibility with the excipients. Methods: Ketoprofen matrix tablets were formulated by employing release retardant natural and synthetic polymers like neem gum, hibiscus mucilage, karaya gum, acacia powder, HPMC and ethyl cellulose respectively. Matrix tablets fillers like Microcrystalline cellulose, Talc were used. Wet granulation method is used to produce sustained release tablets. Results: The main aim of this review was to prove theoretically that, the ketoprofen API blend compatibly with all the excipients including natural and synthetic polymers. After taking considerations from different research experiments which are carried out on ketoprofen sustained release matrix tablet it was concluded that, the bulk and tapped densities of the tablets were observed to range between 0.55 and 0.614 g/ml and 0.62 to 0.652 g/ml, respectively. The friability of the tablets was below 1%, demonstrating that the sustained release tablets were well-compacted and durable. All formulations met the required drug content specifications. The tablets achieved a 99.2% drug release within 12 hours. The Carr’s index for the different powder blends, which were combined with various excipients, ranged from 4.38% to 11.29%. The Hausner’s ratio varied between 1.04 and 1.14, and the angle of repose was between 21.6° and 28.4°. So, the Ketoprofen sustained release tablet can be manufactured by using both natural and synthetic polymers. Conclusion: The study has concluded that the natural gums and synthetic polymers are compatible with the drug and shown optimum effect.
