Abstract

PHARMACOGNOSTICAL STUDY OF NILI (INDIGOFERA TINCTORIA LINN.) LEAF, FRUIT AND SEED

ABSTRACT

Background: Nili (Indigofera tinctoria Linn.) is a shrub that belongs to the Fabaceae family. In Indigenous system of medicine, Nili (I. tinctoria Linn.) is used as a medicine for various diseases such as Asthma, epilepsy, snake bite, mouth ulcer, alopecia, hair loss.[1] Being the wide use of Nili (I. tinctoria Linn.) no detailed data is available for its identification. So, in the present paper detailed Pharmacognostical study of Nili (I. tinctoria Linn.) has been done. Material & Method: For the present study, Nili (Indigofera tinctoria Linn.) has been selected as herbal drug. A thorough study has been carried out of different parts of Nili (Indigofera tinctoria Linn.) plant i.e. leaf, fruit and seed including its macroscopical and microscopical study. Observation: Pharmacognostical study shows the various identification characters of leaf, fruit and seed of Nili (Indigofera tinctoria Linn.) which helps in the authentication of plant. Discussion and Conclusion: Structures like Epidermis/Epicarp, Cortex/Mesocarp, Pericycle, Vascular bundle, Tissues, Starch grains and trichomes are observed which helps in correct identification of Nili (I. tinctoria Linn).
