ABSTRACT
Mukhdushika, an Ayurvedic term for acne, is a common skin condition characterized by comedones, papules, pustules, and sometimes cysts. This condition predominantly affects adolescents but can persist into adulthood, impacting individuals' psychological and social well-being. The Ayurvedic perspective on Mukhdushika associates it with an imbalance in the body's doshas, primarily Pitta and Kapha. Factors such as diet, lifestyle, and stress contribute to this imbalance, leading to the formation of acne. Traditional Ayurvedic treatments emphasize holistic approaches, including dietary modifications, herbal formulations, detoxification procedures, and lifestyle changes to restore dosha balance. Recent research has focused on validating these traditional practices through modern scientific methods. This review explores the pathophysiology of Mukhdushika in the context of Ayurveda, examines various Ayurvedic treatments, and compares themwith conventional dermatological approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of acne management. Integrating Ayurveda with contemporary medicine could offer a synergistic approach to treating acne, emphasizing symptom management, long-term prevention, and overall skin health.
