BIOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF SIDDHA MONOHERBAL DRUG PARANGIPATTAI PODI

ABSTRACT
Siddha medicine is one of the traditional medicines in India, formulated by 18 Siddhars. Panchapootham (Five elements), Muththaathukkal (Three humours) and Aru suvai (six tastes) are the fundamental principles in Siddha system. Siddhars taught preventive and curative methods for the diseases through the roof of Vadham, Vaidhyam and Yogam. Siddha system of medicine is a science which gives ailments to body and mind. Life style advocacies, selection of functional foods and person-oriented treatment regimen are the uniqueness of Siddha system of medicine. These techniques also included food regimens, as well as mental and physical exercises that were to be followed for a mandala (48 days). They promoted "Kaayakarpam" dietary habits. Typically, they involve taking a certain polyherbal or monoherbal medication for a predetermined amount of time. Diabetes, is a group of metabolic disease in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or because cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced. In siddha system of medicine Diabetes mellitus is called by different names such as neerizivu noi(neer means urine and izhivu means excessive discharged, madhumegam (Madhu means sweet and megam means venereal disease) and neerperukkal noi (Polyuric condition). The clinical features of madhumegam can be correlated with type 2 diabetes mellitus in modern science. In this case study, type II diabetic patient was included, and parangipattai podi, a siddha medication, was performed for future research on type II diabetes mellitus.
