A LITERATURE REVIEW ON PANCHAKARPA CHOORANAM - AN EXTERNAL MEDICINAL FORMULATION

ABSTRACT
Siddha system of medicine is an ancient system of medicine established by siddhars. Siddha system has a vast repository of external therapies. External therapies have been classified into 32 types in siddha literatures. Panchakarpa chooranam is the most familiar external medicine which is widely used in so many external therapy procedures such as thalam, thuvalai and so many external procedures yet to be identified. Pancha means five and karpam is process in which leaves, herbs, roots, salt and metals are consumed in a specific dose for a given period of time, along with dietry regimen prescribed for it. They could be prepared daily or already prepared medicines could be used. Panchakarpam is the term that means preparation of five major components which is used as karpam medicine.
