Abstract

A REVIEW ON ANGLE MARMELOS LINN. (BAEL)

ABSTRACT

India is a country that produces the greatest amount of medicinal herbs, resulting in the botanical garden of the entire world.[3] The bael, also known as Aegle marmelos (L.), is a highly valued medicinal tree belonging to the Rutaceae family.[10] Traditional medicine makes great use of the therapeutic values found in all parts of the plant in different health ailments like Diabetes, Diarrhoea, Jaundice, typhoid, ulcer, inflammation, wound healing, cancer etc.[10,7,17] The goal of the current study was to examine the phytochemical and pharmacological characteristics of the plant's leaf, seed, and ripe and semi-ripe fruits that were extracted using different solvents.[3,10] Compare to all parts, the fruits were showing best result.[12] This plant's multiple secondary metabolites contribute to its medicinal uses.[7] Preliminary phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of various phytoconstituents including alkaloids, flavonoids, carbohydrates, glycosides, saponin, tannin, glycosides and steroids in different extracts.[10,12] Angle marmelos also contains phytochemicals like γ-sitosterol, aegelin, skimmianine (tannin), lupeol, rutin, marmesinin, β-sitosterol, flavone, glycoside, Limonene and phenylethyl cinnamamides, Coumarins, marmelosin, marmesin, imperatorin, marmin, alloimperatorin, methyl ether, xanthotoxol, scopoletin, scoparone, umbelliferone, psoralen and marmelide The solvent are used for extraction like methanol, Ethanol, Aqueous /water, Chloroform, Hexane, Acetone etc.[2,11,12,20,24] Antimicrobial, antifungal, hypoglycaemic, anticancer, antidiarrheal, wound healing, antifertility, immunomodulatory, antipyretic, antioxidant and ulcer healing potentials, insecticidal are some of the important medicinal properties of Bael plant.[3,15,22,27] Data collected via the Internet (using Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, Elsevier, Springer, Science Direct, ResearchGate and Web of Science). The aim of the current review article is to compile all the relevant published information regarding traditional uses, phytochemistry and pharmacological potential of Aegle marmelos.
