AYURVEDA MANAGEMENT OF VIRAL CONJUNCTIVITIS RAKTAJA ABHISHYANDA: A CASE REPORT

Nagendra Sonwani* and D. K. Pawar

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Conjunctivitis, commonly known as "pink eye," refers to inflammation of the conjunctiva. The three primary causes of conjunctivitis are viral, allergic, and bacterial, with adenovirus being responsible for the majority of cases. Its occurrence is not uncommon, often associated with settings where people gather, such as hostels, classrooms, and shared accommodations. Conjunctivitis leads to reddening of the eye due to the dilation of blood vessels, usually accompanied by increased tearing or mucoid discharge. This study examines the risk factors, evaluation, and management of viral conjunctivitis, emphasizing the role of practitioners in improving care for affected patients. In Ayurveda, Viral Conjunctivitis can be understood as Raktaja Abhishyanada. Materials and Methods: a 24-year-old male, presented at the eye OPD, ITRA, Jamnagar, complaining of redness, burning sensation, and watering in both eyes for the past two days. Many symptoms align with those described for Raktaja Abhishyanda in ancient texts, thus leading to the diagnosis of Raktaja Abhishyanda. Treatment involved for Avipattikara churna for Shodhana, Yashtimadhu, Lodhra Churna for Parisheka, and for Raktshodhan Bruhat Manjishthadi Kwatha and Haridrakhanda as a antiallergic. Outcome: The patient exhibited gradual symptom improvement over 4 to 5 days, achieving complete relief with proper treatment and adherence to Pathya Sevana. Conclusion: This highlights the efficacy of the Ayurvedic treatment protocol outlined in ancient texts for managing Viral conjunctivitis (Raktaja Abhishyanda).

Keywords: Viral Conjunctivitis, Raktaja Abhishyanda, Parisheka, Haridrakhanda.
