ABSTRACT

Toothpaste, a daily essential for oral hygiene, has garnered attention for its potential impact beyond dental health. Research has explored its influence on systemic health aspects, including hypertension, vitamin B12 deficiency, melatonin supplementation and exploring the benefits of caffeine-containing toothpaste. Studies suggest a complex interplay between toothpaste ingredients and these health parameters. In the realm of hypertension, investigations have revealed intriguing connections between toothpaste components and blood pressure regulation. Potassium-rich salt substitutes in toothpaste formulations have shown promise in modestly reducing blood pressure levels. Furthermore, controlled-release oral melatonin supplementation has demonstrated potential benefits for managing hypertension and nocturnal blood pressure fluctuations. Regarding vitamin B12deficiency, the efficacy of vitamin B12-fortified toothpaste in improving the vitamin B12 status of vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, has been documented. This highlights the role of toothpaste not only in oral health but also in addressing systemic nutrient deficiencies. While direct studies on toothpaste as a melatonin supplement are limited, research on melatonin supplementation itself has indicated positive effects on blood pressure control in individuals with metabolic disorders. This underscores the broader implications of oral hygiene products on systemic health outcomes. In conclusion, this abstract underscore the need for further exploration into the systemic effects of toothpaste beyond oral health. Understanding the intricate relationships between toothpaste ingredients and systemic health parameters like hypertension, vitamin B12 levels, and melatonin supplementation is crucial for comprehensive healthcare strategies.
