M. Kamaladevi* and M. Santhanakumar

ABSTRACT

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a significant pathogen that primarily affects the respiratory tract, particularly in children. RSV is a predominant pathogen for acute bronchiolitis. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and current therapeutic approaches for RSV infection. Recently, it has advanced diagnostic tools like pulse oximetry, viral testing, imaging test and blood and urine culture. Despite its high prevalence and substantial morbidity, especially among pediatric populations, there is no licensed vaccine for RSV, making it a critical public health challenge. Advances in molecular antibodies have the mechanisms of RSV infection and host immune response, the way for potential vaccine and antiviral developments. Current management strategies focus on supportive care, althoughrecent trials of monoclonal antibodies and antiviral agents. The review also highlights the necessary for continued research and the development of effective, preventive and therapeutic interventions are helps to reduce the severity of RSV in children.
