Dr. Swati Pralhad Somani*, Dr. G. S. Hadimani and Dr. Akshay R. Shetty

ABSTRACT

Ayurveda being the life system of medicine emphasizes not only on the treatment of diseased but also on the maintaining the health of healthy person. The health of the person depends entirely on balance of doshas, dhatus and malas which forms the structural and functional units of the human body. Raktapitta is bleeding disorder in which the Rakta and Pitta gets vitiated due to Ashraya and Ashrayi Bhavas and Rakta starts oozing out from the external apertures/Roma Kupas from the body without any injury. It is mentioned as one among the Ashta Mahagadas by Acharya Charaka[1] as it is dreadful and emergency condition or it becomes fatal to life. Acharya Charakacharya has mentioned initially the bleeding should not be arrested and elimination of the vititated doshas is recommended to be done via opposite routes.[2] Treatment protocol includes Brimhana (Nourishment therapy) and Langhana(Attenuation therapy). Langhana includes both Sodhana (Purification therapy) and Samana (Curative therapy) Chikitsa.[3] In Contemprorary Science it can be co-related with the bleeding disorders.

Keywords: Raktapitta, Rakta, Pitta, Ashta Mahagada, Bleeding Disorder.
