*Hridya R. and R. S. Unadkat

ABSTRACT

Background: Dantaharsha is one of the commonly faced dental problems in dental OPDs. Dantaharsha is a condition where the teeth (dwijaa:) becomes intolerant to exposure of wind (pravaata), sour taste (amla), cold food items (seetha bhakshya) and on intake of sour food items (amlaasana) there will be onset of short sharp pain (saruja). As the patients face remission of the complaints, it is ideal to help them out to resolve the problem with Ayurvedic remedy. Ayurveda Samhitas and other Ayurveda Grantas have immense formulations (yogas) and treatment modalities like Gandusha, Kavala for the management of dental diseases. Materials and Methods: This is a case report of a male patient aged 22 years, who came to our Shalakyatantra Dental OPD, complaining of hypersensitivity of multiple teeth and gums of both upper and lower jaw along with pain for the past 2 months. On examination the oral hygiene was found to be very poor and there was generalized gum recession along with dental caries, root exposure, attrition, erosion, and abrasion in multiple teeth. Also considering the aggravating factors Dantaharsha was diagnosed. Kavala with Dasamoola Kwatha and 1tsp Arimedadi Taila was given for first 14days along with Arimedadi Taila Gandusha for first 21 days. Result: The patient showed significant improvement in the assessment criteria. Discussion: Dantaharsha being a Vata predominent condition, Vataharakriya is mentioned as the management for the same. In this patient Kavala and Gandusha were opted as the treatment modality as mentioned in the Ayurveda Samhitas for the management of Dantaharsha. During these procedures there will be maximum exposure of the medicines to damaged dental structures. Arimedadi Taila yoga mentioned for the management of Dantarogas in Sahasrayoga a widely followed textbook in Kerala was selected for both Gandusha and Kavala. Also, Vata Shamana formulation Dasamoola Kwatha was chosen for Kavala. Thus, by the added-on effect of the formulation and treatment modality Dantaharsha management showed significant result.
