ABSTRACT
The word Chardi connotes adhaaraniya vega, lakshana and roga. Forceful expulsion of impurities through mouth with tearing pain over body is denoted as chardi roga. Description about nidana, samprapti, purvaroopa, lakshana, bheda and sadhyasadhyata of chardi roga has been given in Charaka samhita, Susruta samhita, Ashtanga hrudaya, Ashtanga samgraha and Madhava nidana. Five types of chardi are there and one peculiar type i.e, dwishtartha samyogaja chardi has been included by all acharyas. Dwishtartha samyogaja chardi is one among the agantuja type of chardi roga. Offensive feelings occasioned by sensory contact with any kind of despicable, antagonistic, unclean, putrid, unholy and loathsome odour, diet or sight brings about vomiting, and is termed as dwishtartha samyogaja chardi. Vomiting/emesis is a gastro-intestinal disorder characterized by bouts of vomiting, nausea, pain and sometimes black outs. Certainpredisposing factors also trigger the sense/urge of vomiting. Disgust is a universal emotion. It is the feeling/reaction of intense displeasure towards something too revolting. People do experience the feel of disgust through sense organs. Onset of vomiting/nausea while gets disgusted by any repugnant sight, smell, taste etc. is a sporadic and spontaneous condition but it prevails on. Insula is a region of brain that involves in processing sensory information viz. taste, smell and sight. And disgust center of brain is located in insula. When people are exposed to disgustful things, insula sends signals to vomiting center, which then activates muscles of the stomach and esophagus to expel contents of stomach. Serotonin, dopamine and acetylcholine are the neurotransmitters involving in this process. Serotonin plays key role in activation of vomiting center whereas dopamine and acetylcholine coordinate the muscles of stomach and esophagus. Here an attempt has been made to highlight the concept of dwishtartha samyogaja chardi with a presumable correlation to disgust induced vomiting.
