ABSTRACT

Background: Acne is a prevalent skin condition among teenagers, results from the blockage of sebaceous gland and colonization with Propionibacterium acnes. People have been concerned about acne, which is common among teens and adults as a result of their daily lifestyles. It is more acceptable to believe that natural remedies are safer with synthetic subjects than with fewer side effects. The present work deals with the development and evaluation of the herbal Anti-acne face wash containing aqueous extract Neem leaves (Azadirachta indica), Aloevera (Aloe barbadensis), Honey (Apis), Indian sarsaparilla (Hemidesmus indicus), garlic (Allium sativum). Although various topical herbal formulations for acne are available in the market, we propose to make pure herbal formulations without using any synthetic ingredient. Methods: Four formulations were prepared using extracts
of Neem leaves, honey, aloe vera, garlic and Indian sarsaparilla definite proportions. The desired concentration of gelling agent i.e. xanthium gum was weighed accurately and dispersed in hot rose water (not more than 60°C; 50 % weight of the batch size) with moderate stirring, avoiding air entrapment and allowed to soak overnight. Desired quantity of Aloe vera and neem was dissolved in desired amount of honey by gentle stirring. Desired quantity of concentrated herbal extracts was added to the remaining amount of rose water and mixed with above honey mixture by gentle stirring. This was finally mixed with previously soaked gel formulation. Prepared formulations were filled in a suitable container and labelled accordingly. Results: The natural ingredients are selected based on their activity. The mentioned plants have good antibacterial, antiacne, skin moisturizing activity. The formulation is prepared using different concentrations of ingredients and evaluated. It was found that prepared formulation has customer satisfactory colour, good spread ability, pH found to be 4.58, moderate foaming ability and show good activity against Propionibacterium acne. Conclusion: It has been observed that the demand for plant based healthcare and cosmetic preparations has increased over the last few years due to increased adverse effects caused by the synthetic chemicals used in the developing products. Three formulations F1, F2, F3 and F4 were prepared using different quantity of Herbal ingredients. Hence all formulation exhibits excellent antiacne activity and suitable for skin.
