Abstract

A STUDY ON EVALUATING THE SAFETY OF TRAMADOL IN ORTHOPEDIC DEPARTMENT

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Tramadol is a low-level opioid increasingly recommended to treat moderate to severe acute and chronic pain. The study is to improve the quality of prescribing and may help to overcome the problem associated with prescribing the drug. Aim AND Objectives: The main aim of our study to evaluate the safety of Tramadol drug in orthopedic department To study the adverse reactions of tramadol usage in patients. Methodology: It is a prospective observational study was conducted in orthopedics department in tertiary care hospital for 4 months. All the patients who were prescribed with Tramadol It is a Prospective observational study which is conducted over a period of 4 months in 53 patients at Orthopedics department, Government general hospital, Kurnool. Results and Discussion: A prospective observational study was conducted for months in a tertiary care hospital in orthopedicdepartment at government general hospital, Kurnool. A total 53 subjects were coming under inclusive criteria among them 47 were males and 6 were females. A total number of 53 subjects were collected. Among them, age of distribution was as follows, males below 20 (5),21-30 (10),31-41 (15), 41-50(8),51-60(13), 61-70 (2) and 70 above are none. Most of the population are in the age group of 31-40. Out of 53 subjects seven subjects have previous history of fracture, and one subject have an history coronary artery disease. Conclusion: Our study has concluded the average number of drugs per prescription was high. Our study highlights the need to minimize the average number of drugs per prescription. The major adverse effects seen with tramadol are nausea and vomiting, followed by headache, constipation, dizziness, sweating, flushing, sleepiness confusions which can be managed by prescribing the supportive therapy and by regular monitoring the patient condition. Regular educational interventions at different levels may further promote rational prescribing.
