A REVIEW OF SANTOL FRUIT (SANDORICUM KOETJAPE)

ABSTRACT
Sandoricum koetjape is a captivating ordinary plant that has over the years served as a customary treatment in several countries in Asia. Due to its effectiveness in treating wide-ranging ailments, many people have picked interest in this herb for their wellness purposes since time immemorial. This plant has been studied for its chemical constituents and medicinal properties of extracts from the plant have shown very promising results in medical research. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of S. koetjape based on botanical, geographical, phytochemical, and pharmacological features that gives hope for this plant to be used as a medicine. Efforts should be directed towards more research to discover more about this plant’s potential medicinal uses. The seeds from S. koetjape plant yield fat that contains 30 different chemicals, such as ring-A secotriterpene, neooleanic-type triterpene,secomultiflorane-type triterpene, 23-hydroxymultiflorane triterpene, and limonoids. In traditional medicine, this plant is used for the treatment of a variety of conditions including diarrhea, fever, colic, and leucorrhoea. S. koetjape has been used in practices of traditional medicine in many societies. In addition, its medicinal properties have also been validated in numerous authors’ scientific works. Moreover, much research has been done on this plant in terms of its pharmacological activities and new drugs that can serve various purposes are expected to come from it.
