Abstract

ROLE OF AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT IN GRIDHRASI (SCIATICA): A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT

Low back pain is most commonly occurring disease in both geriatric and middle age in the present era produced commonly due to stressful life, inactive lifestyle, office and computer work, prolong duty hours. Nearly 40% people experience sciatic pain at some point in their lifespan. Gridhrasi is described under eighty types of nanatmaja vatavyadhi which develops due to the vitiation of vata dosa which closely resembles with sciatica, which is considered as pain or discomfort associated with sciatic nerve. In gridhrasi pain starts from kati-prushta (pelvic and lumbosacral region) radiating towards jangha pada (thigh and legs) restricted movement of lifting the leg. In gridhrasi, Gait of the person is very similar to vulture (gridhra) hence the name is given as gridhrasi. Ghridhrasi can be treated miraculously with procedures of panchakarma and internal medication. Here in this case study, 38-year-old, female patient who was previously diagnosedwith disc bulges are observed at L3-L4 and L4-L5 level and herniation (protrusion) is observed at L4-S1 level, which is correlate with gridhrasi. Radiating pain in left leg, unable to sit and walk since 5 months approached to Ayurvedic hospital and was treated with Panchakarma treatment including dashmoola kwath niruha basti, narayana tail matra basti, kati basti, and angnikarma along with shamana chikitsa. The treatment was continued for consecutive 24 days. After 24 days of treatment, Symptomatic assessment and SLR of patient was carried out, satisfactory and markable outcome was there and overall quality of life of patient was significantly improved.
