REVIEW OF LODHRA (SYMPLOCOS RACEMOSA ROXB.) - IT'S OTHER TYPES AND THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL

ABSTRACT
Lodhra is a well reputed drug in Ayurveda with styptic and wound healing properties. It is indicated for various diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, bleeding piles, epistaxis, menorrhagia, skin, eye, ear, liver diseases etc. Apart from Ayurvedic classical texts, many present-day experimental studies have also established its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, anti-androgenic, anticancer, anti-asthmatic etc. activities. Phytochemical studies indicated presence of two crystalline alkaloids namely, loturine 0.24%. and collutrine 0.02%, one non-crystalline alkaloid -loturidine 0.06%, tannins and colouring matter. The main aim of this review study is to provide literary and phytopharmacological profile of different types of Lodhra in support with the traditional practices and latest researches.
