Abstract

RESEARCH ARTICLE: FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF MICROEMULSION FOR TOPICAL DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM USING MODEL DRUG

Shrotika Pramodrao Patinge*, Dr. M. A. Channawar and Dr. A. V. Chandewar

ABSTRACT

The main aim of present study was to formulate and evaluate microemulsion for topical delivery of clotrimazole with an objective to increase bioavailability of drug. Microemulsions are one of the best candidates as novel drug delivery system because of their long shelf life, improved drug solubilization with ease of preparation and administration. Microemulsions are thermodynamically stable and optically isotropic liquid solutions of oil, water and amphiphile. They have emerged as novel vehicles for drug delivery which allow controlled or sustained release for ocular, percutaneous, topical, transdermal, and parenteral administration of medicaments. Total 13 microemulsion formulation were prepared using castor oil, Clove oil as a oil phase, Tween 80, span 80 (surfactant) and Propylene glycol, n-butanol (co-surfactant) were used in different ratio. Prepared formulations were evaluated on different parameter like % drug content, pH, viscosity, density and in-vitro diffusion study using franz diffusion cell. Results: It was seen that after 8 hours of diffusion, the drug diffuse from the formulation F5 faster and more than that of the others i.e 82.5%. Conclusion: On the basis of different evaluation parameters microemulsion formulation of F5 batch were found to be the best and optimized batch. Present study concludes successful delivery of Clotrimazole by the means of microemulsion formulation.

Keywords: Clotrimazole, Surfactant, co-surfactant, microemulsion.
