ABSTRACT

Aim was to assess analgesics utilization pattern in patients underwent orthopaedic and spine surgeries. This present study design was a prospective observational study carried out at Udai Omni Hospital, Hyderabad for a period 6 months. Total of 200 patients were included after obtaining the consent. Majority 40% of patients were diagnosed with bone fractures, followed by 36% of patients were diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Total 2018 drugs were prescribed to 200 patients. Average number of drugs per prescription was 10.09. Out of 2018 drugs, 742 analgesic drugs were prescribed among 200 patients. Out of 742 analgesic drugs prescribed, 134 and 608 analgesic drugs were prescribed preoperatively and postoperatively respectively. Average number of analgesics per prescription was 0.67 and 3.04 preoperatively and postoperatively respectively. Majority of analgesics were prescribed by brand name 58.14%. Tramadol was prescribed to
majority 34.33 % and 29.77% of patients pre-operatively and post-operatively respectively. The results showed that postoperative pain management was achieved with multimodal analgesics in majority 92.50% of patients. Patients prescribed with non-opioid analgesics were more 29.23 % than opioid analgesics 6.64%. Pharmacists was included in collaboration with orthopaedist to provide insight about analgesic utilization for postoperative pain management. Thus, in future drug utilization studies need to be conducted involving pharmacists to update and promote rational utilization of analgesic drugs and to encourage patient centered care.
