ASSESSMENT OF DRUG ABUSE IN ADOLESCENCE AND ROLE OF PHARMACIST IN ITS PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT

ABSTRACT
Background: The increasing concerns and risks associated with adolescent drug abuse, including its impact on physical and mental health, academic performance, and social well-being. An overview of the evolving role of pharmacists in healthcare, emphasizing their accessibility to the public and their potential involvement in preventive healthcare measures. Objectives: To assess the prevalence of drug abuse among adolescence and Explore the role of pharmacist in drug abuse management. Materials and Methods: A interventional questionnaire based study conducted in 175 participants using DAST interpretation guide in Calicut, Kerala. Results: Out of 175 participants 16% was found to be drug abused. After counseling the intensity of the drug abuse was reduced by 17.85%. Age and gender are significantly associated with substance abuse. Conclusion: Pharmacists are often the first healthcare practitioners to notice drug addiction, placing them in a position to assist with drug abuse prevention and rehabilitation by providing education and increasing awareness about the hazards of drug usage. Pharmacists must be thoroughly trained and provided the tools they require in order to deliver successful drug abuse management.
