Abstract

BIODEGRADABLE HERBAL EXCIPIENTS - DISINTEGRANTS AND SUPERDISINTEGRANTS

Shriyash Shimpi*, Rushikesh Shirsat, Harshada Wagh, Tejas B. Patil

ABSTRACT

Provides an extensive overview of herbal excipients used in pharmaceutical formulations. Excipients are essential substances that aid in the processing and stability of drug delivery systems. Natural polysaccharide polymers derived from plants serve various functions in pharmaceuticals, including as binding agents, disintegrants, sustaining agents, and coating materials. These herbal excipients offer advantages such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, economic feasibility, and easy availability. However, they also present challenges like microbial contamination, variations in composition, slow production rates, and the risk of heavy metal contamination.

The abstract further delves into the classification of excipients based
on their functions, highlighting the diverse roles they play in drug products. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of herbal excipients, emphasizing their potential in pharmaceutical applications despite certain limitations. The document also explores specific herbal disintegrants, their characteristics, and their applications in pharmaceutical formulations, including examples such as Chitin, Gum Karaya, Agar, Soy Polysaccharide, and Mango Peel Pectin.
Furthermore, it discusses natural superdisintegrants derived from plants such as Lepidium Sativum, Plantago Ovata, Fenugreek, and Guar Gum, which offer faster drug dissolution and improved bioavailability compared to synthetic counterparts. The abstract concludes by underscoring the importance of natural superdisintegrants in enhancing drug delivery systems and ensuring effective therapy and patient compliance in pharmaceutical formulations.

The comprehensive review incorporates references from various sources to support its findings, providing a thorough understanding of herbal excipients and their significance in pharmaceutical formulations.

Keywords: Herbal excipients, Pharmaceutical formulations, Natural disintegrants, Super disintegrants, Tablet disintegration.
