ABSTRACT
Drugs which increase the urinary excretion are called as diuretics. Due to the various side effects of the synthetic diuretics, there is a need for natural diuretic. The objectives of the study is to evaluate the diuretic effect of Jasminum grandiflorum in Wistar rats in comparison with the standard drug furosemide. The ethanol extract of Jasminum grandiflorum was prepared and administered orally to Wistar rats at a dose of 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg. The urine was collected, measured and the urine output was found to be increased compared with the normal saline group. The sodium and potassium concentration in the urine was also increased compared with the normal saline control group. The preliminary Phytochemical screening by standard methods has shown the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, proteins, glycosides, saponins, coumorins, tannins, Phytosterols, flavonoids and phenols. The result has given an indication that Jasminum grandiflorum can be further taken to research as a diuretic drug.
