Abstract

A REVIEW ON OXOLAMINE CITRATE LOZENGES

Shruti Patel*

ABSTRACT

Objective: oxolamine citrate was formulated as lozenges to provide effective release medicament for the management of cough and sore throat. Many dosage forms like syrup, tablet, are available in the market but still there is a need for new dosage forms which acts effectively and locally. So, the present investigation has been taken up to formulate and evaluate lozenges to meet the need of improved bioavailability and hence avoid gastric irritation bypassing of 1st pass metabolism and increase in onset of action.
Experimental Work: The lozenges were prepared using various sugars like mannitol, dextrose, sucrose and Isomalt as base; PG, various grades of PEG and glycerine as plasticizer. All the formulations prepared were subjected to various evaluation parameters like hardness, drug content, content uniformity, friability, weight
variation, dissolution etc. after that final optimized formulation was subjected to stability study for a period of 1 month. After completion of stability study period, the optimized formulation was subjected to above mentioned evaluation parameters.
Results: the optimized formulation was contained Isomalt and 0.7 ml Glycerine, because lozenges were not formed with any other sugar. Lozenges were only formed using Isomalt as a sugar and 0.7 ml glycerine as plasticizer. In case of other plasticizers, lozenges were not found as hard candy. The optimized formulation has a hardness of around and not gritty. The optimized formulation has content and content uniformity around 97%. In-vitro drug release of optimized formulation has been found to be more than 99% within 20 min. after stability study for a period of 1 month, all the evaluation parameters were carried out for optimized formulation and it was found that the results of stability study were not so much differ from earlier results. Conclusion: From the present work, it can be concluded that the Isomalt can be successfully used as the tooth friendly sugar substitute in the formulation of medicated lozenges and glycerine can be used as a plasticizer to give better appearance. the moulded lozenges can provide an attractive alternative formulation in the alleviation of cough and sore throat.
