ABSTRACT
To determine the Anti anemic activity of plant extracts of Boerhavia diffusa and its effect on selected biochemical indices in order to determine the efficiency of this extract in treatment of anemia in HUMAN. Boerhavia diffusa is taken in herbal medicine for Anemia & pain relief and other uses. This study evaluates the Anti-anemic effect of the plant extract based on hematological and biochemical parameters and body weight in 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine induced hemolytic anemia in Wistar rats. Extract were administered into the three groups of rats and the hematological parameters were evaluated. Increase in the level of hemoglobin and PCV of rats fed with raw extracts, followed by rats fed with heated extracts and lastly control rats fed with water and normal feed. There was a progressive increase in total protein level and RBC of rats fed with heated extracts followed by rats fed with raw extracts and lastly control rats. There was a decrease in albumin of rats fed with heated extracts followed by raw extracts while the albumin level of the control rats is increased. The results suggest that the Ethanolic plant extract of Boerhavia diffusa isrelatively safe and possesses a significant Anti-anemic property; therefore, it may be a potential lead in the discovery of drug for treatment of hemolytic anemia.
