FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF POLYHERBAL MOUTHWASH USING GUAVA LEAF EXTRACT

ABSTRACT
In order to prevent oral diseases oral hygiene plays an vital role, oral hygiene refers to the practice of keeping the mouth, teeth, gums, and tongue clean and in good condition. The Mouth wash is an effective way to kill the micro-organisms and various bacteria. In the present study poly-herbal mouth wash was prepared by using guava leaf extract, Tulsi leaf extract, clove oil etc. Aqueous extract of guava leaves was prepared by maceration technique. Phyto-chemical analysis of aqueous extract of guava leaves was performed for determining presence of various phytoconstituents. Presence of tannins helps to indicates chances of antimicrobial property of guava leaf. The Agar diffusion method was used to determine anti-microbial activity ofaqueous guava leaf extract. Three bacterial cultures namely E-coli (gram negative bacteria) and staphylococcus aurous (gram positive bacteria) and bacillus subtilis were used for determination of antimicrobial property of extract. Herbal mouth wash was prepared by using guava leaf extract. Prepared mouthwash was evaluated for various parameters such as colour, odour, pH, foaming index, stability etc. Prepared mouth wash was compared with marketed mouth wash for antimicrobial activity.
