ABSTRACT
The oral epithelia cells are surrounded by an inter cellular groundsubstance mucus, which are made up of proteins and carbohydrates. Some of them are complexes force of association or some may beattached to certain regimes on the cell surfaces. At physiological pHthe mucus network carries a negative charge (due to sialic acid andsulfate residues) which may play a role in muco adhesion. At this pHmucus can form a strong cohesive gel structure that will bind to theepithelial cell surface as gelatinous layer. The salivary volume isbetween 0.5 to 2 liters and the amount of fluid is that much availablethat it can hydrate oral mucosal dosage forms.
