AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS IN PREGNANCY- A REVIEW

ABSTRACT
Pregnancy is a really great boon given by god to a women. A good pregnancy can produce a healthy progeny. But as there are many benefits of pregnancy, it also having many unwanted effects on female body. Total physical as well as psychological health of every woman get hampered during pregnancy. There is lots of stress found in pregnant woman due to various reasons. And this stress ultimately leads to psychiatric diseases. Also body structure of woman changes suddenly during this period hence it will also result in unwanted stress. Stress is one of the key cause in psychiatric disorders in pregnant women. Commonly psychiatric disorders in pregnancy includes different diseases such as Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH), Eclampsia, Vomiting in pregnancy etc. Ayurveda also told some conditions where psychological condition of pregnant woman get hampered, for example Dauhruda Avamana Conditions, Dvishthartaj Chhardi, some Jataharini related disorders etc. These diseases not only affect the mother but also causes bad impact on fetal outcome also. In modern science very limited treatment approach is there on psychiatric disorders, the drugs such as antihypertensive, anxiolytics, anti-depressants, mood stabilizers are used in psychiatric disorders. But these drugs having very teratogenic effects on pregnant mother as well as foetus. Ayurveda having holistic treatment approach. Ayurveda science believe in principle-“Prevention is better than cure.” Ancient Ayurveda Acharya given specific dietic as well as behavioral regimen for pregnant women, with this regimen pregnant women remains free from various physiological as well as psychological disorders. Also Acharya told effective and safe management of various pregnancy psychiatric diseases by which there will be no harmful effect of disease on woman or baby. Medhya rasayana and satvavajaya chikitsa are important treatment modalities in this context.
