Abstract

ANAEROBIC Cu(II) CATALYST OXIDATION OF MERCAPTOSUCCINIC ACID BY METHYLENE BLUE IN ACIDIC MEDIUM

*Maya Shukla and Kalpana Chansoria

ABSTRACT

Kinetics of the oxidation of mercaptosuccinic acid by methylene blue, the environmental factor considerably affect the reactivity of transition metal likeCu2+. Kinetic parameter are very much different in aerobic and anaerobic condition. In anaerobic condition the order follows zero order kinetics with respect to methylene blue .The order is unity in TMA and MB. The rate decreases on increasing [H+] initially then(ca>2.0x10-2M) increases. The rate show positive effect of [Cu(II)] gives a straight line with slope 1.07. The increase in dielectric constant rate increases, the variation in ionic strength with KCl rate decreases but with NaCl, KNO3 and K2SO4 show transition from zero to first order and first order remains almost constant. The stoichiometry is found to be 2:1 between TMA and MB. The addition addition of oxidised product and leuco base does not affect the rate. The activationparameter evaluated on increasing temperature, rate decreases but at higher temperature the rate constant tends to attain a limiting value, this shows anti-Arrhenius behaviour of the reaction.

Keywords: Mercaptosuccinic acid, methylene blue, anti-Arrhenius behaviour, anaerobic condition.
