REVIEW OF VINCA ROSEA AND ANTICANCER DRUG

ABSTRACT
Catharanthus roseus, also known as periwinkle, is a plant species with significant medicinal properties. This review provides an overview of its morphology, geographical distribution, chemical constituents, pharmacological activities, toxicities, and uses. Catharanthus roseus contains over 70 distinct indole alkaloids, including vinblastine and vincristine, which have been used in cancer treatment. Additionally, the plant exhibits anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, antioxidant, anti-helminthic, anti-ulcer, wound healing, and hypotensive activities. However, it is important to note potential side effects and toxicities associated with its use. Overall, Catharanthus roseus holds promise as a valuable source of medicinal compounds with diverse therapeutic applications.
